Overview
Clickbait explores the ways dangerous and uncontrolled impulses are fueled in the age of social media, and reveals the ever-widening fractures between virtual and real-life personae. For instance, the Brewer Family, who discovers that one of their own, Nick Brewer, is missing, having appeared on a viral video, which contains a chilling message saying that he will die should the video reach 5 million views. 1 | "The Sister" | Brad Anderson | Tony Ayres & Christian White | August 25, 2021
After fighting with her brother Nick Brewer at a family dinner, Pia Brewer angrily goes for a night on the town and accidentally drops her phone in the toilet. The next day while at work, a patient she attends to shows her a video of Nick visibly beaten and holding up a card that says "I abuse women." He then holds up a different card that says "At 5 million views I die." Distraught, Pia attempts to contact Nick but is unable to as her phone is still drying at her apartment. She contacts Nick's cellphone through her work phone, and then arrives at his work place, but learns that Nick has not arrived at work yet. Pia then goes to Nick's wife Sophie at the school where she teaches, and both proceed to go to the police. They meet with Detective Roshan, who assures them that everything is being done to verify the situation. Nick and Sophie's kids, Ethan and Kai, have also seen the video and are staying out of school for the time being. Pia retrieves her phone and finds a voice message from Nick who apologizes for their fight and says there are things he needs to talk about with her. Pia goes to see if their mother has heard from him, but after realizing she has not, opts to keep her in the dark about the video instead. The police ask Sophie and Pia to return for a secondary interview after a second video is released: Nick holding a sign that reads "I killed a Woman." Sophie and Pia confirm that while the first two signs were in Nick's handwriting, the third one is not. The investigation now moves from missing persons to the homicide department. Outside of the station, Pia confronts Sophie about Nick's voicemail, but the latter tells her not to share it with the police (who are beginning to suspect Nick of confessing to crimes he committed). Pia returns to her workplace to ask a patient of hers, Vince, for help. Vince has started a forum where an online community is examining the videos for clues on Nick's whereabouts. Afterwards, the forum points out clues in the background that suggest Nick was being held in a delivery van, managing to narrow down the model used. Pia brings this information to the police, who manage to track down the van after the video has reached five million views.
2 | "The Detective" | Emma Freeman | Tony Ayres & Christian White | August 25, 2021
It is confirmed that the abandoned van is where Nick was held and where the videos were filmed. Senior Detective DeLuca from homicide is now in charge, and he takes Detective Roshan Amiri off the case. DeLuca seizes all mobile devices from the Brewer family to look for clues, but Pia claims that her phone is still drying at home. Wanting to be back on the case, Detective Roshan makes a deal with Pia that if she requests his continuous involvement in the case as a liaison, he will keep her in the loop about any progress in the investigation. Roshan discovers that Ethan is still holding onto a tablet that Nick owned, where he is monitoring an application where volunteers mark on a map where they have already searched for Nick (albeit for voyeuristic reasons). Roshan shows his sergeant the application as well as a journal entry on Ethan's phone that Nick and Sophie were fighting about an issue. Roshan also hands the tablet to DeLuca, telling him they "missed it" after the latter continues to downplay his involvement. Under police advisement, Sophie releases a statement that she believes the kidnapper is mistaken, and that Nick has not committed any of the crimes he is accused of. Pia hands Detective Roshan her phone with the voice-mail, who hands it to his Sergeant. He also admits that prior to Nick's disappearance, he was about to meet with Pia through a dating app. Upon leaving his Sergeants office, he finds that DeLuca has placed photos from his dating profile around the office in an attempt to ridicule him. Roshan confronts DeLuca, claiming him to be a racist, and downplaying his involvement because he is a Muslim. DeLuca retorts however that his issue with Roshan is with his inability to work with others, and that his interest in the case appears to be so he can be promoted. The police manage to locate where Nick appeared to have been abducted, locating a syringe nearby. Roshan shares this information with the Brewer family, and also confronts Sophie and Pia separately on any issues with Nick. While Sophie vehemently denies having any marital issues with Nick, Pia admits that a few months prior Nick came to her to be treated for bruises, asking her to keep this between them. A notification on the app "GeoNick", where the public marks where they have searched for Nick, leads them to the docks where a body appears to have been found: only for it to be a mannequin with Nick's face pasted on it as a joke. Using data from Nick's phone, Roshan tracks down a bar that Nick had been to the day he received his bruises, and finds surveillance footage where he engages in a brawl with an unidentified man. Roshan suggests that the police use the information from the GeoNick application to narrow down the search, which leads them to Nick's corpse. Roshan breaks the news to a distraught Pia, and is officially promoted to the Homicide department for finding Nick's body and earns DeLuca's respect. While reviewing the surveillance footage of Nick's brawl, Roshan begins to suspect Sophie's involvement in the matter.
3 | "The Wife" | Brad Anderson | Pete McTighe | August 25, 2021
Detectives Roshan and DeLuca break the news of Nick's death to Sophie and ask her if she can identify the man seen in the surveillance footage. She denies knowing the man until Roshan shows an image of him wearing the same shirt in a photo with her on social media. Sophie admits the man is Curtis Hamilton, a former colleague. While insisting that Curtis was only a friend, she recollects how they had an affair. Sophie returns home to break the news of Nick's death to her children and Nick's mother. Pia asks Roshan to show her Nick's body, only to be turned away as his body is still being examined by the coroner. Sophie tells her mother about the fight Curtis and Nick had, and that she chose not to disclose her affair to the police. Sophie sneaks out of the house later that night to meet with Curtis and asks about his involvement with Nick's disappearance. DeLuca and Roshan arrive in the middle of their conversation and arrest Curtis after he refuses to cooperate by surrendering his digital devices. While at the police station, Sophie discloses her affair with Curtis, and recollects how she told Nick about the affair. Despite being initially upset, Nick still makes up with her afterwards. The next day, Ethan and Kai find footage of Curtis's arrest and question why Curtis would have wanted to hurt Nick. Suspicious, Pia confronts Sophie, who admits her affair; they are overheard by Ethan and Kai. Upset, Ethan leaves the house and Sophie tries to follow him. While visiting various skating parks, Sophie recognizes a woman who has been following her and confronts her. The woman introduces herself as Emma Beesly. Emma tells Sophie that she was in a relationship with Nick, who met her under the pseudonym "Danny Walters." While being initially skeptical, Sophie starts to believe Emma after she mentions that their relationship began six months ago, when she told Nick about her affair; and that she lives in LA, where Nick frequently traveled for work. Sophie finds Ethan at Pia's apartment and discusses with Pia how they could verify Emma's story. They attempt to access the profile of "Danny Walters," but find that it has been deleted. Pia asks Vince to help retrieve the profile from the dating site. Later that day, a memorial is being held at Nick's workplace, and information regarding her affair with Curtis has leaked to the press. Roshan and DeLuca, while escorting the Brewer family to the memorial, inform Sophie that Curtis has been released after establishing an alibi. Before the memorial, a student who worked with Nick named Jenny attempts to tell Sophie something about Nick, only to be cut off by Nick's coworker Matt. Vince arrives at the memorial as well and shows Pia the profile of "Danny Walters" who is indeed Nick. Overwhelmed at the memorial, Sophie attempts to leave early, only for a bystander to tell her she should be ashamed of her affair.
4 | "The Mistress" | Emma Freeman | Melissa Scrivner Love | August 25, 2021
Emma Beesly gives her statement to the Oakland police department, disclosing her affair with Nick. Emma's daily life is shown: her work as an insurance agent who helps her clients successfully make claims, and her relationship with Nick under his "Danny" persona. On the day Nick is kidnapped, she is at the gym with her friend Audrey, learning of his situation via the news. Emma follows the case closely, and decides to go to Oakland to help shed more light on the situation. Emma waits outside the Brewer house, hoping to find an opportunity to talk to Sophie. While waiting, she gains the attention of a reporter, Ben Park, who gives her his card. At this moment, Ethan storms out of the house (when he finds out about Sophie's affair from the previous episode), followed by Sophie whom Emma follows in her car. Emma tries to work up the courage to talk to Sophie, who confronts her after noticing that she is following her. Emma tells Sophie about her affair with Nick and returns to her hotel room, where she watches a debate on whether Nick did commit the crimes he was accused of. Audrey calls her and asks why she went to Oakland, to which Emma admits she wanted to see Nick's life in Oakland, claiming he did love her. Emma ends the call, and fantasizes about Nick being in the same room as her. The next day, Emma goes to give her statement to Detective Roshan. Not wanting to return yet, Emma goes to Nick's workplace to see his shrine and meets Matt. Pia then arrives to ask Matt if he was aware about Nick's affair, learning about Emma's arrival earlier. Meanwhile, Sophie begins to receive death threats on her phone after someone doxed her and put her phone number online. Pia confronts Emma at her hotel room, telling her that she has no place being there. Emma insists that what she and Nick had was real, and shares details that Nick told her about his childhood with Pia. Later that night, Emma receives a threatening phone call, telling her to leave town. She calls the police and leaves the hotel, but a green truck follows her and runs her off the road. At the hospital, Emma gives her statement to Roshan. Pia arrives as well (having been contacted by Emma) and learns that Nick had multiple online personas where he met different women. Distraught, Emma returns to LA and meets with one of the other women who knew Nick, learning her name from Pia. The woman, Mandy Harrison, is an artist. Nick told Mandy the same things he told Emma. Emma buys a painting of Nick that Mandy painted and burns it, afterwards appearing in an interview with Ben Park where she exposes Nick.
5 | "The Reporter" | Ben Young | Bradford Winters and Tony Ayres | August 25, 2021
Ben Park shows the interview he had with Emma in the previous episode to his editor Dakota. She orders him to find more information on the matter, and get an interview with Sophie. Ben poses as a food delivery man, and films the inside of the Brewer home when he is discovered by Pia. Ben leaves his card with the Brewers, before being chased out of the house. Returning home, Ben and his boyfriend Cameron attempt to find Nick's online dating profiles, and discover Jenny commenting on an online forum that anyone who attempts to defend Nick did not really know him. Ben interviews Jenny the next day at the college, who tells them she believed that Nick may have had something to do with Tara Wilson, another girl who was on the volleyball team who left, believing Nick had abused her. Ben attempts to speak with Tara, who refuses to give a statement. Back at the office, Sophie has brought her lawyer to meet Ben's editor Dakota, intending to sue the network for Ben trespassing. In an attempt to avoid charges, Dakota agrees not to air the interview with Emma Beesly if Sophie will do an exclusive interview with them, to which she agrees. Dakota removes Ben from the story, much to his chagrin. Undeterred, Ben continues to search for Nick's dating profiles and finds a persona he used: Jeremy Wilkerson. Through the dark web, Ben obtains access to the dating profile, and discovers that Nick was involved with a woman named "Maggie Oxley." Using photos from her dating profile, he tracks her location to a bookstore in Sacramento. While there, Ben and Cameron learn that "Maggie Oxley" was an alias for Sarah Burton, a woman who died four months ago. They learn that she has an older brother, Simon, and go to his apartment. Ben breaks in and finds Sarah's phone, narrowly managing to escape Simon when he returns to the apartment. Upon returning to Oakland, Cameron is upset at Ben's callousness and insensitivity and decides to spend the night at his parents' house. Ben goes through Sarah's phone and discovers that Nick was ignoring her, eventually goading her to commit suicide after she threatened to do so. Ben brings this information to Dakota, and asks to be Sophie's interviewer or he will bring the information to a rival network instead. During the interview, Ben ambushes Sophie about Nick's involvement with Sarah's death, overwhelming her and causing her to storm out. Returning to his apartment, Ben finds Cameron waiting for him, who pleads for him to be more empathetic towards others. Realizing Ben will not change, Cameron leaves him. Meanwhile, as Sophie's interview is aired, Simon watches intently with a grim expression.
6 | "The Brother" | Ben Young | Bradford Winters | August 25, 2021
Six months ago, Simon Burton works as a content moderator for Klonis. Through spyware he installed on his sister's laptop, Simon learns that she has begun a relationship with someone named Jeremy. While initially skeptical, he is overjoyed that this new relationship has helped get her life back on track. As time passes, Sarah's relationship with "Jeremy" worsens, and she begins to spiral out of control. Four months before the events of the first episode, Simon receives a call from Sarah moments before she commits suicide. As the coroner removes her body, he discovers how "Jeremy" goaded her into suicide. With the help of his friend Darryl, Simon discovers "Jeremy" to be Nick Brewer in Oakland. In the present day, Darryl and Simon are perturbed that the police are at their workplace. As Roshan questions him, Simon feigns ignorance, and claims that he was fishing with Darryl on the day that Nick was kidnapped. As Roshan leaves, Simon messages Darryl to lay low and not be found. Later that day, the two of them meet to corroborate their alibis. Meanwhile, Sophie has decided to remove all of Nick's pictures from the Brewer house, causing Pia to be upset and leave. She learns from Roshan that Simon is now a suspect, and drives to Sacramento to meet him. The two discuss their suspicion on how the only picture Simon has posted of himself was for the day that Nick was kidnapped, and the two almost sleep together, before Roshan refuses as doing so would have him removed from the case. The next day, Roshan asks Simon to follow him to the Sacramento police department for an interview, but Simon runs instead, only to end up arrested anyway. While at Simon's workplace, Pia spots a nervous and anxious Darryl, who recognizes her as Nick's sister. Darryl attempts to hold her at gunpoint, but Pia manages to escape and asks a bystander to call the police. As Simon and Darryl are arrested, Simon reflects on how the two of them went to Oakland to kidnap Nick and forced him to hold the cards for the videos. Simon tells Roshan that he will only give a statement if he can first talk to Pia, who agrees. After telling Simon that Nick's death accomplishes nothing, with Sarah still dead, Pia learns that Simon did not kill Nick. Instead, Simon reveals that when he confronted Nick on his treatment of Sarah, Nick denies ever knowing her and insists that he has never made any dating profiles. While at first not believing him, Nick points out an inconsistency in one of the photos of him and Sarah, and Simon realizes Nick is innocent. Simon lets Nick go, who tells him that he has only ever told one person about Sophie's affair and knows who is responsible, promising to make them pay. Simon insists that he does not know who killed Nick, but that it was neither him nor Darryl.
7 | "The Son" | Cherie Nowlan | Melissa Scrivner Love and Tony Ayres | August 25, 2021
After Simon and Darryl have been arrested, Ethan and Kai return to school. While Kai's friends are happy to see him again, Ethan's friends attempt to maintain a distance from him. School bully Michael unsuccessfully attempts to goad Ethan into a fight, but Kai overhears and punches Michael instead, beginning a brawl. Sophie is asked by the school principal to come by to talk about Kai's behavior, and learns the next day that Michael's father intends to pursue charges against Kai. Sophie convinces the school principal to set up a mediation between the two families. At dinner, Pia shares her belief that Simon did not kill Nick, and that Nick was innocent after all. In a private conversation, Pia reveals to Sophie that their father had committed suicide when they were young, something which has affected the family profoundly and why she insists Nick would never have goaded Sarah into suicide. Throughout the series, Ethan has been messaging Alison, a girl he met online. After watching an interview from Mandy Harrison, Ethan begins to suspect that she never met Nick in person, something that Mandy confirms with him via email. Ethan brings this information to Pia, who brings it to Roshan, but the police insist that Nick's case is closed. While Sophie and Kai go to the mediation meeting with Michael and his father, Ethan demands to meet Alison in real life, suspecting that she is involved with Nick's murder and catfish. Alison insists that she cannot meet him as she has an anxiety disorder, but gives him her address to see her himself. Ethan goes to the address and finds that Alison was telling him the truth and apologizes. After an awkward start, the two begin to bond. Alison suggests that Ethan try to contact Emma Beesly, to verify if she has met Nick in person. While at first adamant that they did meet in person, when Ethan asks if she recognizes Nick's voice from an old video, she is unable to and admits that she has never met Nick in person. Alison tells Ethan that if he had the pictures the catfish sent Emma, she could use the metadata to track a location from which the pictures were sent. Pia meets with Vince and they deduce that since the catfish knew details about their lives, it has to be someone that Nick knew well. Vince reveals that before Simon was arrested, there were rumors that Nick was involved with one of the volleyball girls, Tara Wilson. Pia asks Tara if she had a relationship with Nick, but she insists that they did not: Nick was telling her to stop her relationship with someone else and not to quit the team. The guy Tara was seeing began harassing her and eventually posted naked pictures of her online. As Pia presses further, Tara reveals that she was seeing Matt. Pia goes to Nick's workplace and with the help of Nick's colleague Dawn, gains access to Matt's computer. Pia finds naked photos of Tara and pictures of Nick that were used for Nick's dating profiles. Ethan tells Sophie that Emma managed to confirm that she has never met Nick in person, meaning Nick was innocent, leaving her in tears. After Sophie previously suggested that they move, Kai becomes upset at the idea and sees Ethan's computer, where Alison has sent over the location where the pictures were sent from. Returning to her apartment, Pia finds Matt waiting, who asks why she broke into his computer. As the confrontation gets heated, Pia's roommate Elli arrives and Matt leaves. Sophie discovers that Kai is missing, and calls Pia. Kai is seen heading towards the location sent by Alison, armed with a baseball bat.
8 | "The Answer" | Cherie Nowlan | Tony Ayres | August 25, 2021
Ethan realizes that Kai was on his computer, and saw the location that Alison sent. Ignoring messages and calls from Ethan and Sophie, Kai knocks on the door of the catfish where Nick's colleague Dawn answers. Kai believes that the location he found was an elaborate prank by Ethan and accepts Dawn and her husband Ed's invitation to come in before they drive him home. After learning how Kai found them, the two leave him in the dining room, as Ed retrieves a gun and tells Dawn that he is going to end this. Two years ago, when Nick first began working at the college, he asks Dawn for help in setting up his computer, in the process gaining all of his usernames and passwords. Later that same night, out of curiosity Dawn discovers a dating profile that Nick made briefly and abandoned when he was angry at Sophie, and begins to impersonate him. She begins to set up multiple dating profiles using Nick's photos and is eventually discovered by Ed who is disgusted and storms out. As this occurs, Sarah Burton repeatedly messages to ask why she is being ignored. Annoyed, Dawn goads her into committing suicide when she threatened to do so. In the present day, Ed and Dawn pretend to drive Kai home as Sophie and Pia arrive at the now empty house and learn that Dawn was the catfish. Realizing something is amiss, Kai attempts to contact his family, only for Dawn to throw his phone out of the car. They bring him to a ranch nearby and keep him inside a trailer. There, Kai learns that after Simon released Nick, he came to confront Dawn about using his pictures and name to catfish women and drive Sarah Burton to suicide. While Dawn attempts to deny doing so, Nick points out that she is the only person he had confided to about Sophie's affair and she had access to his computer. Nick attempts to bring Dawn to the police, but Ed strikes him on the head repeatedly, killing him. Kai escapes the trailer, but is almost shot by Ed. The two of them chase after him, where he attempts to hide in a stable. Meanwhile, Roshan and the police department arrive and begin to search the ranch. Hearing Sophie call out for him, Kai comes out of hiding but runs into Ed. Roshan and the police find Dawn and arrest her, while Ed holds Kai at gunpoint. Dawn convinces Ed to let Kai go, but Ed refuses to be arrested and forces the police to shoot him. In the aftermath, Sophie puts Nick's pictures back up, now that it is clear that Nick has never cheated on her. At Nick's funeral, Roshan tells Pia that Tara has decided to press charges against Matt. Sophie stands at the entrance of the funeral feeling overwhelmed, but Pia manages to reassure her that they will get through this by supporting each other, as a family. |

Reception
Critical reception
The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reports a 58% approval rating with an average rating of 6.3/10, based on 31 critic reviews. The website's critics consensus reads, "With an array of flashy, half-formed ideas and thin characterizations, Clickbait is more akin to its namesake than the deeper show it aspires to be."[9] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 48 out of 100 based on 12 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[10]
Roxana Hadadi writing for RogerEbert.com wrote "Clickbait is a reminder of why Netflix series became such hits in the first place. A cast of recognizable, serviceable actors dive with melodrama and zeal into a narrative that defies logical sense but moves at a breakneck pace, ends on cliffhangers like clockwork, and incorporates just enough zigs and zags to keep viewers guessing."[11]
Adam Sweeting at www.theartsdesk.com described the series as a "fiendishly cunning thriller" and concluded that "the way Ayres and White handle their final-reel reveal is a masterclass in advanced whodunnitry. They even helpfully lob in a subsidiary could-be villain as a decoy. We are left to ponder whether Clickbait is itself clickbait."[12]
James Croot writing for www.stuff.co.nz wrote that "as a police procedural and heart-stopping horror, it is aces, evoking memories of David Fincher’s finest (Seven, Panic Room), ratcheting up the stakes as the video’s ticker goes into overdrive."[13]
Viewership
Between August 23 and September 12, 2021, Clickbait was the most-viewed original streaming title in the US for three consecutive weeks according to Nielsen Holdings[14]
Clickbait was the most viewed series on Netflix in the United States in September 2021,[15] and the fourth biggest show globally.[16]
Clickbait was the most viewed series on Netflix in the UK in August [17] and September 2021.[18]
The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Clickbait hit the No.1 spot on Netflix in more than 20 countries.[19]
