Cha Cha Real Smooth is a 2022 American comedy-drama film written, directed, produced, and co-edited by Cooper Raiff. It premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival on January 23, 2022.[3] It is scheduled to be released on June 17, 2022, by Apple TV+.

Premise

A young man who works as a Bar Mitzvah party host strikes up a friendship with a mother and her autistic daughter.[4]

Production

In March 2021, it was announced Dakota Johnson and Cooper Raiff would star in the film, with Raiff directing from a screenplay he wrote, and Johnson set to serve as a producer under her TeaTime Pictures banner.[5] In August 2021, Leslie Mann, Brad Garrett, Raúl Castillo, Odeya Rush, Vanessa Burghardt, Evan Assante and Colton Osorio joined the cast of the film.[6]

Principal photography began on August 12, 2021, with filming taking place in Pittsburgh.[7][8][9]

Release

It premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival on January 23, 2022. Afterwards, Apple TV+ acquired the film's distribution rights for $15 million.[10] The film showed at SXSW on March 18, 2022.[11] The film is also set to screen at the Tribeca Film Festival in June 2022.[12] It is scheduled to be released on June 17, 2022.[13]

Reception

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 91% of 80 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 8.1/10. The website's consensus reads, "A touching dramedy that wears its heart proudly on its sleeve, Cha Cha Real Smooth further affirms writer-director-star Cooper Raiff as a talent to watch."[14] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 74 out of 100 based on 13 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[15]

At the Sundance Film Festival, the film earned an Audience Award from the U.S. Dramatic Competition.[16]
