Background and composition

Following her success on social media, Poarch signed a record label deal with Warner Records. "I feel like I found my family and part of that family is the label," Poarch says of signing to Warner in a statement to Billboard. "When I looked up some of the artists that meant the most to me musically like Prince, Dua Lipa, and Madonna, I realized Warner has helped all of those people along the way too. So I'm very honored to have a family that gave me a chance and believes in me."[3] Poarch adds, "I've been singing and writing songs my whole life but to put together something special in this way and to have this opportunity... it's something I'll forever be grateful for. This is just the beginning."[3] She is said to deliver "her own dynamic and diverse brand of dark pop".[4]

The sheet music for "Build a Bitch" is published in the key of E-flat major[5] and is set in time signature of common time with a tempo of 103 beats per minute. Poarch's vocal range spans from B♭3 to C5.

Production

Made in collaboration with producer-songwriter Sub Urban, Poarch shares that the track was inspired by the direct scrutiny she received online. "Build a Bitch" is about accepting yourself for who you are instead of listening to other people's ideas of what you should do or how you should look. "I hope it helps people to feel more confident and good about themselves, and also reminds them not to judge anyone else," she says via a press statement.[4] The song's cover art was made by popular artist 'YaLocalOffgod.'

Reception

The song received positive reviews from critics and fans-alike for her vocal performance and the song's lyricism. Hattie Collins of Vogue said that the song "demonstrates both her innate musical talent and ambitions as an artist. Deftly dismantling the impossible standards of beauty that we are put under." Collins also noted that the song is "incredibly" catchy and, "unsurprisingly", a hit on TikTok.[6] The New York Times said of the video, "Poarch is coming into her own music [and] 'Build a Bitch' comes across cute and furious."[7]

Music video

Directed by Andrew Donoho and creatively directed by Sub Urban,[2] the music video for "Build A Bitch" premiered alongside the single on May 14, 2021.[3] The video features a shop where boys can create their ideal girl, similar to a Build-A-Bear Workshop.[2] A multitude of parts are created for assembly per varying customer preferences, but no one picks the "beta version" of Poarch. She is labeled as "defective" and sent into a lava pit for disposal, but manages to override the system and be summoned for a boy, whom she then beats up. Poarch destroys the machine responsible for making the girls, frees the other prototypes, and burns the factory down.[2]

The music video included cameos from Valkyrae, Mia Khalifa, Bretman Rock, Larray, ZHC, Dina, Rakhim, and Sub Urban.[2] Having garnered 15.5 million views within the first day of release, it became the most-viewed music video in its first 24 hours by Warner Music. In less than a week, it was viewed 70 million times on the platform.[8] As of April 2022, it has over 380 million views.
