In a September 2010 meeting between the Foreign Ministers of Kosovo and Botswana, Skënder Hyseni and Phandu Skelemani, Skelemani said that the ICJ had given "a clear decision", and said that he would soon formally present a position for recognition to his government.[1] In October 2010, Skelemani said that Botswana has not yet made a decision on recognition of Kosovo pending the ruling of the European Union, and that Kosovo had promised support in the establishment of a medical school in return for its recognition.[2]

In March 2011, Skelemani said that Botswana still had to advise itself properly in order to come up with an informed decision on the issue. He said that the matter of Kosovo has been before the ICJ and therefore it required a close look as it involved law.[3] In September 2013, Botswana Foreign Minister Phandu TC Skelemani, promised the recognition of Kosovo stating that it was now only a matter of procedure before it happens.[4]

In September 2014, Skelemani said that his country valued as positive the developments in Kosovo, which paved the way to the possibility for reviewing of recognition by his country.[5]

Having unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in 2008, it is formally recognised as an independent state by 97 UN member states (with another 15 recognising it at some point but then withdrawing recognition), while Serbia continues to claim it as part of its own sovereign territory.
