History

It is estimated that its name in the Byzantine period was Poleatikon. When the Byzantine emperors returned from their campaigns in Anatolia, the city chief would greet them here. So it is thought that there was a palace for the emperor in Bostancı. When the Umayyad forces besieged Constantinople (now Istanbul) in 718, there was also a port where part of the Umayyad navy took refuge.

During the Ottoman period, the main road that connects the capital to Anatolia passed through Bostancı. In this place, which was the eastern border of the city, a Bostanji (a type of imperial guard, which literally means "gardener" in Turkish) outpost was established and the entrances and exits to Istanbul were controlled by the Bostanji guards here. The name of the neighbourhood came from this Bostanji outpost.

Transport

From the Bostancı shore, five islands; Kınalıada, Burgazada, Heybeliada, Büyükada and Sivriada can be seen. Bostancı is also a very crowded intersection place for the Asian side of Istanbul with the city buses, sea buses, commuter ferries, trains and dolmuş. Bostancı is mostly considered as the beginning point of Bağdat Avenue reaching up to Kadıköy. All the intercity trains going to Anatolia make a stop at the Bostancı railway station, which is situated opposite of the Bostancı pier.
