As of April 22, 2022, according to the Chief of Police of the Kyiv Oblast Andriy Nebytov, more than 80 bodies were found in Borodianka.[1]
History
On 26 March 2022, Russia, repelled from Kyiv, progressively withdrew from the region to concentrate on Donbas.[2] Borodianka's mayor said that as the Russian convoy had moved through the town, Russian soldiers had fired through every open window. He estimated at least 200 dead.[3]
Only a few hundred residents remained in Borodianka by the time the Russians withdrew, with roughly 90% of residents having fled,[4] and an unknown number dead in the rubble.[5] The retreating Russian troops placed mines throughout the town.[4]
On April 4, 2022, the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Iryna Venediktova stated that the situation in Borodianka regarding the mass murders is the worst.[6][7] On April 7, she noted that 26 bodies had been found under the rubble of only two destroyed buildings.[8] President Volodymyr Zelensky subsequently said that the death toll at Borodianka was "even worse" than at Bucha.[9][10][11]
During a search organized by the Ministry of Internal Affairs for representatives of Ukrainian and foreign media, Interior Minister Denys Monastyrsky said that Borodianka was one of the most devastated settlements in the Kyiv Oblast, stressing that it was another crime against humanity. According to the minister, emergency services began dismantling the debris a month ago, when it was still possible to rescue people, but the enemy began firing on them and their equipment. The next day everything happened again and after that rescuers did not have access to the ruins. Therefore, search and rescue operations were able to resume only after the liberation of the city, when there were no survivors.
In April 2022, the Chief Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine published data from the Russian military's 234th Assault Regiment. This unit, in particular, committed genocide of the Ukrainian people in Borodianka.[12]
