Bittereinderdag
Bittereinderdag (Bitter-ender Day) is celebrated annually on May 31 by the Afrikaner people, commemorating the Boer guerilla fighters known as bittereinders.
Origin
On May 31, 1902 the Treaty of Vereeniging was signed by the British Empire, Transvaal, and the Orange Free State, ending the Second Boer War.
Due to the British forces' reliance on scorched earth tactics and concentration camps, many of the Boer forces were unwilling to concede.[1]
Bittereinders are those who did not agree to the British Empire's preliminary peace talks in 1901, as well as those who refused to sign the Treaty of Vereeniging or acknowledge its legitimacy. Those who continued to fight after the signing of the treaty, or who left South Africa in protest,[2] may also be considered bittereinders.
