Renoir wanted to succeed at the Salon and, after several attempts, in 1870 his Bather with the Griffon was accepted, a work that he conceived expressly for its exhibition at the Salon, purposely seeking the classicism that the members of the jury admired so much. The work is thus reminiscent of Titian's Venuses, and also of eighteenth-century gallant painting in the little dog, the setting and the woman in the background looking at the young bourgeois, who has undressed to take a bath in a discreet corner of the river, modestly covering his genitals with one hand.

There is nothing Impressionistic about light and figure, receiving favorable reviews for its echoes of Corot and Courbet. Odalisque (Woman of Algiers), heir to Delacroix's orientalism, was presented together with her by the painter.[3]
