Asmongold first gained popularity through his YouTube channel. He has been active on Twitch since 2013, gaining a cult following as a World of Warcraft streamer.[8] Ahead of the 2017 announcement of World of Warcraft Classic, he had long wished for and speculated about the game mode's development.[8] Upon the release of Classic in 2019, he surged in overall popularity.[9] He was also one of the platform's most popular World of Warcraft streamers during the 2020 release of Shadowlands.[10]

On July 3, 2021, Asmongold started playing Final Fantasy XIV to hundreds of thousands of viewers.[11] In the weeks following, FFXIV experienced substantial growth in number of players and overall popularity. He eventually began to also play other games like Lost Ark and Elden Ring near their time of release, and plans to return to Final Fantasy XIV later, as well as check out the next World of Warcraft expansion which was announced in 2022.
