Armenia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022

Armenia is set to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin, Italy, having internally selected Rosa Linn to represent the country with the song "Snap", which was written by Linn herself along with Larzz Principato, Jeremy Dusoulet, Allie Crystal, Tamar Kaprelian and Courtney Harrell.

Background

Prior to the 2022 contest, Armenia has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest thirteen times since its first entry in 2006.[1] Its highest placing in the contest, to this point, has been fourth place, which the nation achieved on two occasions: in 2008 with the song "Qélé, Qélé" performed by Sirusho and in 2014 with the song "Not Alone" performed by Aram Mp3. Armenia has, to this point, failed to qualify to the final on three occasions, in 2011, 2018 and 2019, the latter with the song "Walking Out" performed by Srbuk. The nation briefly withdrew from the contest in 2012 due to long-standing tensions with then host country Azerbaijan.[2]

The Armenian national broadcaster, Public Television of Armenia (AMPTV), broadcasts the event within Armenia and organises the selection process for the nation's entry. Armenia has used various methods to select the Armenian entry in the past, such as internal selections and a live televised national final to choose the performer, song or both to compete at Eurovision. Between 2014 and 2016, the broadcaster internally selected both the artist and the song, while the national final Depi Evratesil was organized in 2017 and 2018. The broadcaster opted to internally select the Armenian entry in 2019, and for the later-cancelled 2020 contest, the Armenian entry was once again chosen via Depi Evratesil, where Athena Manoukian emerged as the winner with the song "Chains on You".[3]

Armenia had originally planned to participate in the 2021 contest, but ultimately withdrew due to social and political crises in the aftermath of the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war.[4] On 20 October 2021, it was announced that Armenia will return to the contest in 2022.[5]

Before Eurovision

Internal selection

Upon their return to the 2022 contest, AMPTV selected the Armenian entrant internally, with the contributions of focus groups across Armenia and international music professionals reviewing a number of shortlisted entries submitted to the broadcaster. Candidates rumoured to be in the running were Athena Manoukian, Saro Gevorgyan, Kamil Show and Rosa Linn, of which the latter was rumoured by several Armenian media sites to have been officially selected by AMPTV.[6][7] However, on 15 February 2022, AMPTV dismissed the claims that Linn had been selected, stating that no decision had been made yet and that an announcement would come in March.[8] On 4 March, it was reported in several Armenian media outlets that Rosa Linn and Saro Gevorgyan were the two singers in the running to represent the nation at the contest.[9]

Rosa Linn was announced as the chosen entrant on 11 March 2022, with her competing song "Snap" released on 19 March, along with the official music video which was directed by Aramayis Hayrapetyan.[10][11]

Promotion

Rosa Linn is currently making appearances across Europe to specifically promote "Snap" as the Armenian Eurovision entry. She first performed at the Israeli preparty Israel Calling, held in Tel Aviv's Menora Mivtachim Arena on 7 April.[13] She also performed in the Eurovision in Concert at Amsterdam's AFAS Live on 9 April.[14] In addition to these promotional events, on 19 March 2022, Rosa Linn recorded her 'live-on-tape' backup performance in Sofia, Bulgaria.[15] This can be used if she is unable to travel to Turin, or subjected to quarantine on arrival.[15]

In the run-up to the contest, the Armenian national broadcaster AMPTV launched a promotional series Destination Eurovision featuring the Armenian representative Rosa Linn.[16] The series will focus on Linn's journey to Turin, telling her story, the story of her selection and the preparations for her performance of her song "Snap" in the Eurovision Song Contest.[16]

At Eurovision

According to Eurovision rules, all nations with the exceptions of the host country and the "Big Five" (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom) are required to qualify from one of two semi-finals in order to compete for the final; the top ten countries from each semi-final progress to the final. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) split up the competing countries into six different pots based on voting patterns from previous contests, with countries with favourable voting histories put into the same pot. On 25 January 2022, an allocation draw was held which placed each country into one of the two semi-finals, as well as which half of the show they would perform in. Armenia has been placed into the first semi-final, to be held on 10 May 2022, and has been scheduled to perform in the second half of the show.[17]

Once all the competing songs for the 2022 contest had been released, the running order for the semi-finals was decided by the shows' producers rather than through another draw, so that similar songs were not placed next to each other. Armenia was set to perform in position 17 (last), following the entry from Norway.[18]
