Life and career
Ana Nikolić was born on September 27, 1978 in Jagodina, but grew up in Paraćin.[1] After graduating from grammar school, Nikolić moved to Belgrade where she attended secondary polytechnic school, studying design.[1] In 1998, she lost her father, which according to Nikolić, stimulated her to become more independent and to start performing professionally.[1] She states Greek singer Sakis Rouvas as an important musical influence.[1]
Nikolić rose to prominence in 2003 on the music festival called Beovizija with her entry "Januar" (January), finishing in 7th place.[2] Subsequently in August, she released her debut album through City Records, on which she began working with the likes of Marina Tucaković and Aleksandar Milić Mili. In 2006, Nikolić returned to Beovizija with "Roamle, romali", finishing as the runner-up. With the song and her sophomore album, Devojka od čokolade (Girl Out Of Chocolate), which was released the same year, she gained more significant popularity and embarked on her first tour.[2] Her third body of work, Mafia Caffe, was released July 2010 to commercial success as well.[2]
In the summer of 2013, she released Milion dolara (Million Dollars) with several stand out hits, such as the title track featuring rapper Nikolija and "Đavo" (Devil).[3] Nikolic's fifth album, Labilna (Labile), was released in May 2016. Produced by Rasta and Coby, it saw significant departure from her previous work to a more urban sound.[4] While working on Labilna, Nikolić started dating Rasta, whom she eventually got married to in July that year.[5] The couple went on to appear as judges on the fifth season of Serbian spin-off of the Got Talent franchise.[6] They also collaborated on "Slučajnost" (Coincidence), which was released in June 2017 and was later included to Rasta's album titled Indigo.[7] On August 3, Nikolić gave birth to daughter Tara and later that year separated from Rasta.[8][9] After the pregnancy, she decided to take a break from music to focus on motherhood and her body image issue regarding a significant and highly publicized weight gain.[10][11]
In February 2020, Nikolić returned to public life by releasing "Bilo je lepo" (It Was Nice) followed by six other music videos, which were all supposed to be a part of the album titled Klinika (The Clinic).[12] However, the album was eventually scrapped due to COVID-19 pandemic.
