Admiral Hotel (Mobile, Alabama)

The Admiral Hotel (also known as The Admiral and formerly known as the Admiral Semmes Hotel is located in downtown Mobile, Alabama. This historic hotel opened in 1940[2] and was one of the 32 founding hotels included, in 1989, in the National Trust for Historic Preservation's program Historic Hotels of America.[3] The Admiral was also the first hotel in Mobile to provide air conditioning and telephones in every guest room.[2]

History

When it was built, and until 2009, it was known as the Admiral Semmes Hotel, named for Raphael Semmes, captain of the Confederate commerce raider CSS Alabama.[4] In addition to the air conditioning and telephones in all guest rooms, the hotel also featured a coffee shop, a drug store, cocktail lounge and even a National Airlines office. In the late 1960s, singer Jimmy Buffett performed regularly at the Admiral's Corner cocktail lounge located at the hotel.[5]

In 2014 after being purchased by the Mississippi-based Thrash Group, it underwent an extensive, $27 million renovation.[6] The renovations were overseen by architect James Flick of Dallas-based Flick Mars.[2]

Description

The building is 12-stories high and originally had 170 guest rooms. After the remodel in 2014, it now has 156 standard guest rooms and five luxury, multi-room suites on the top floor. It has a depression era style and maintains its art deco features, including the elevator doors. The interior has a more opulent look with marble floors, and oval balcony overlooking the lobby, a large spiral staircase and a chandelier.[2][7]

The hotel now features two restaurants and an outdoor pool as well as the original meeting spaces. There are eight event areas, including a ballroom, comprising 6,795 sq ft (631.3 m2).[8]

Branding
  • In 2009, it was known as The Radisson Admiral Semmes Hotel.
  • In 2015, after the remodel, it became part of the Hilton Curio Collection and went by the name The Admiral Hotel Mobile, Curio Collection by Hilton.[9]
  • In April 2020 the branding was again changed and it is currently known as The Admiral, A Wyndham Hotel.
