Beginning at a junction with the A1 at Clifton, south of Morpeth, it is one of two numbered roads in Morpeth town centre, the other being the A192. North of Morpeth it meets the Morpeth Northern Bypass at Whorral Bank Roundabout, and continues east as the Pegswood Bypass. The 1.5 mile (2.4 km) bypass was completed in 2007[1] - prior to this, through traffic on the A197 travelled directly through Pegswood on Front Street. East of Pegswood the A197 meets the A1068 at the western edge of Ashington, before passing through the town north of the town centre. At the eastern edge of Ashington it meets the A189 at Woodhorn Roundabout, and the two roads enter a short 300 metre concurrency heading north; after this, the A197 turns east again to pass through Woodhorn, and then enters Newbiggin, where it continues to the town's centre on the beachfront, terminating about 150 metres from the shore.
