Shooting

At around 1 a.m. ET on April 16, 2022, five men were shot in the Cedar Heights Plaza on Markham Road & Lawrence Avenue East, in the Woburn neighbourhood of Scarborough, Toronto.[2] They had just finished their taraweeh prayers for Ramadan at Scarborough Muslim Cultural Centre (SMCC), two blocks away, and had gathered in the plaza to discuss where to eat.[1] On Twitter, an account for the Toronto Police Operations Centre stated that all five men had serious injuries, but none were life-threatening, and that four were found at the scene and one made his own way to a hospital.[3][4]

Investigation

Later on that day, the Toronto Police Service started an investigation into the attack. They are requesting the public’s assistance and as of April 17, 2022 are investigating what the motive could be for the shooting.[4] They found that at least six shots had been fired from a blue car which fled the scene via Markham Road. The police also found casings and bullet holes at the scene.[3]
