2021 Summer World University Games

The 2021 Summer World University Games (Chinese: 2021年夏季世界大学生运动会), officially known as the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games,[3] is a multi-sport event sanctioned by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), scheduled to be held in Chengdu, Sichuan, China from 26 June—7 July 2022. These will be the third edition of the Games to be hosted by China, and the first edition to be branded under the "World University Games" title rather than "Universiade".[4]

The Games were originally scheduled from 16—27 August 2021. On 2 April 2021, it was announced that the Games would be postponed by one year to 2022 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, with scheduling to be announced at a later date. The Games will continue to be branded as Chengdu 2021.[5][6] In May 2021, FISU confirmed that the Games had been rescheduled for June 2022.[5]

Host selection

On 1 September 2014, FISU opened bids for the 2021 Winter and Summer Universiades.[7] Bucharest, Romania[8] and Santiago de Cali, Colombia[9] announced intents to submit bids for the Summer Universiade. Turkmenistan was offered to host the Games, but declined.[10] On 14 October 2018, it was reported that the FISU had proposed a joint bid between Seoul, South Korea and Pyongyang, North Korea, during a meeting between Mayor of Seoul Park Won-soon and the FISU's secretary-general Eric Saintrond.[10]

On 13 December 2018, it was reported that a representative of Chengdu, China had signed a "pre-attribution contract" with the FISU at a meeting of its steering committee in Braga, Portugal.[11] On 1 March 2019 prior to the Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk, Chengdu was officially announced at the host of the 2021 Summer Universiade.[12]

Sports

Because of the creation of the FISU University Football World Cup in 2019, the sport will no longer be part of the Summer World University Games program starting at that year.[14][15] With this change, the number of mandatory sports will be kept at fifteen, since the place will be occupied by badminton which after five editions as an optional sport turned a compulsory sport.[16]

Marketing

Motto

The official motto of the games is Chengdu Makes Dreams Come True or 在成都，成就每一个梦想; zài Chéngdū, chéngjiù měiyī gè mèngxiǎng in Chinese.[1]

Sun and Immortal Birds Gold Ornament

The logo of the World University Games in Chengdu draws inspiration from the sunbird, a symbol of ancient Sichuan culture and also from the letter 'U' that stands for university sports.

Mascot

The mascot "Rong Bao" (Chinese: 蓉宝), a Giant panda, was unveiled on 30 December 2019. "蓉" stands for Chengdu and "宝" means baby.[17]

Participating nations

CAS ruled on 17 December 2020 to reduce the penalty WADA had placed on Russia. Instead of banning Russia from sporting events, the ruling allowed Russia to participate at the Olympics and other international events, but for a period of two years, the team cannot use the Russian name, flag, or anthem and must present themselves as "Neutral Athlete" or "Neutral Team." The ruling does allow for team uniforms to display "Russia" on the uniform as well as the use of the Russian flag colors within the uniform's design, although the name should be up to equal predominance as the "Neutral Athlete/Team" designation.[18]

On 19 February 2021, it was announced that Russia competed under the acronym "ROC" at the 2020 Summer Olympics and 2022 Winter Olympics after the name of the Russian Olympic Committee although the name of the committee itself in full could not be used to refer to the delegation and this penalty was expanded for the all afillied events with the International Olympic Committee. After this, Russia would be represented by the flag of the Russian University Sports Federation. Is expected that Russia will host next year games in Ekaterinburg. However, on 12 March 2022, the FISU Steering Committee issued a statement condemning Russian invasion of Ukraine and decided to ban athletes and officials from Russia and Belarus from participating or hosting your events until the end of 2022.[19][20]
