2019 Hobbs, New Mexico party shooting

On August 25, 2019, three partygoers were killed and four others were wounded after arguments occurred at a party in Hobbs, New Mexico. Bishop Henderson, a 19/20-year-old male DJ at the party, was arrested and only initially charged for non-fatally shooting one person.[1] The victims mainly came from other areas outside of New Mexico, and were in their late teens to mid-twenties.[2][3] However, Henderson was charged in the three deaths. He was accused of pointing a gun at someone at a pool table. The shooting occurred after 12:40 a.m., after tensions escalated and gunfire was reported from a car driving by and hitting people in the backyard.

Shooting

The three dead victims were found by police in the backyard of the party house. The suspect, Henderson, was arrested less than two hours later at another house in Hobbs. Initially, police were called to the house at 11:47 p.m. for calls of loud music complaints. An hour later, gunfire was reported at the house. On scene, two witnesses described as Henderson being the shooter.

He was described by a witness as pointing a gun towards someone by a beer pong table, and saw Henderson shoot a man. According to Henderson's lawyer, the shooting started as a drive-by shooting with shooters hitting the backyard of the party, with Henderson returning fire.

Victims

The three fatalities were an 18-year-old Hobbs male, a 22-year-old Washington, D.C. male, and a 24-year-old Hobbs female.

The injured were treated at Lea Regional Medical Center, but three victims, who were driving away from the scene, were transferred from there to a Lubbock, Texas hospital.[4]

Two of the fatal victims had GoFundMe accounts made for funds to go towards them, and Victims Fund Compensations were mailed to University of the Southwest, where some of the victims attended.

Trial

In January 2020, Henderson was charged in the three deaths. In April 2021, the trial was delayed for a third time, and would continue in November 2021. As of March 2021, Henderson nor anyone involved has been found guilty of any crime involved. He was accused of firing a gun, but not hitting anyone, and pointing it at someone during a game of pool, but not shooting. According to Hobbs police, he said that he had fired his gun after gunfire erupted from a car driving by and firing towards the backyard.
