- April 2: 46th Academy Awards: Frank Film by Frank Mouris wins the Academy Award for Best Animated Short.[3]

- 9-24 May: 1974 Cannes Film Festival:
- Peter Foldes' Hunger wins the Special Jury Prize.[4]
- The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat, a sequel to Ralph Bakshi's Fritz the Cat (from 1972) but this time directed by Robert Taylor, becomes the first animated film to be entered at the Cannes Film Festival, but wins no awards.[5] The film is later officially released on 26 June, but flops. Only later will it gain a cult following.[6]

- July 8: Charles Swenson's Down and Dirty Duck premieres, featuring the voices of rock singers Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan (aka Flo & Eddie).[9]
