Municipal election for Bharatpur is expected to be held in March 2022 for the position of Mayor, a Deputy Mayor, 32 Ward Chairmen and Ward Members. All positions are for a period of 5 years.[4][5] A secondary election is to be held for municipal executive which will elect 5 women from the elected ward members and 3 members who must be from the Dalit and minority community. The electorate for this election will the 159 members chosen direct election.[6]

Background

Elections were last held in 2017. With the passing of a new constitution, a commission was formed to restructure the existing local levels into more powerful and autonomous local bodies. Electors in each ward will elect a ward chairman and 4 ward members. Out of 4 ward members, 2 must be female and one of the 2 females must belong to the Dalit community.

Candidates

Jagannath Paudel

A veteran Nepali Congress politician and advocate Paudel is an Independent mayoral candidate. Paudel has previously served as deputy mayor of Bharatpur winning election in 2054 BS. He's even served as member of National Assembly. Currently, Election Commission has given him pineapple election symbol. He's been a threat to both CPN (Maoist Centre) and CPN (UML) candidate while Nepali Congress had obtained the highest wardwise vote in previous elections.[7]

Renu Dahal

Dahal, a former mayor of Bharatpur is running in the election even this time from CPN (Maoist Centre). Dahal is the daughter of Pushpa Kamal Dahal. Dahal had won 2017 election with the help of Nepali Congress.

Bijay Subedi

Subedi, a former member of Provincial Assembly of Bagmati Province is the mayoral candidate from CPN (UML). He was put forward by Devi Gyawali who had lost previous elections by a very small margin.
