2020s in fashion

The fashion of the 2020s represents a departure from 2010s fashion and has been largely inspired by styles of the early to mid 2000s, 1980s, and 1960s.[1][2][3][4][5][6] Popular brands in the United Kingdom, United States, and Australia during this era include Adidas, Nike, Globe International, Vans, Kappa, Tommy Hilfiger, Asics, Ellesse, Ralph Lauren, Forever 21, The North Face, and Superdry.

During the 2020s, many companies, including current fashion corporate giants Shein and Shekou, have been using social media platforms like TikTok as a tool for marketing.[7] Marketing strategies involving third parties, particularly influencers and celebrities, have become a prominent tactic for brands to aid in promoting their products. The rise of e-commerce platforms such as Depop and Etsy made it accessible to buy vintage, homemade, or resold clothing from individual sellers, not major fast fashion retailers.[8]

COVID-19 pandemic

When the COVID-19 pandemic began in early 2020, it influenced many aspects of society, including fashion trends. Wearing a face mask became a common and often mandatory practice to prevent the spread of the virus.[9] The shortage of manufactured supplies, human desire for self-expression, and the ability of brands to quickly design and make effective face masks without specialized cloth technology soon led to an influx of mask designs. In addition, the ability of brands to key into the dynamics of the world during the pandemic allowed for a combination of fashion and COVID-19 preventive strategies, such as face masks.[10][11] The pandemic brought many societal changes, such as working from home and wearing masks in public. In response to these changes, new fashion trends emerged that prioritized comfort, style, and safety. Along with face masks, both men and women favored new everyday wear. This included sneakers, loungewear, pajamas, and zoom tops, which are shirts that are kept close by so you can easily be presentable for a Zoom meeting.[12]

Women's clothing

2000s revival

Due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 and a new interest in early to mid 2000s fashion, people in the UK, Australia, the US, Europe, and Asia rejected the form-fitting clothes that were a staple of 2010s fashion[13] for fairtrade, vintage, and cruelty-free friendly clothing. Fashion conscious British women rejected nylon, acrylic, rayon, new cotton, and polyester in favor of tencel, linen, organic cotton, and recycled polyester.[14] In India, Pakistan, and Ceylon, Generation Z girls repurposed the sari worn by their mothers' generation by pairing it with sneakers, casual knitwear, crop tops, T-shirts, black Oxford shoes, Y2K inspired platform sandals, and sportswear. The dresses were often made in contrasting shades of grey, black, and blush pink for a sleek, modern, and corporate look.[15]

Later that year, younger British and American women were abandoning skinny jeans for sweatpants, sweat suits, leggings, baggy shorts,[16] mom jeans, high rise pants, overalls, pants with drawstring waists, zip up denim jumpsuits with large pockets, boot cut pants and leggings,[17] pink velour tracksuits, miniskirts, leather skirts, ankle length skirts sometimes made from sheer fabric,[18] baggy pants,[19] and culottes.[20]

Popular shirts and dresses included, puffer jackets made from upcycled deadstock fabric, sweatshirts, tucked in sweaters, brocade topcoats,[21] midriff baring tops, ribbed turtlenecks, off the shoulder knitted tops, science fiction inspired metallic jackets,[22] loose-fitting shift dresses [23] or blouses, cashmere cardigans,[24][25] and oversized 80s inspired[26][27] dog's tooth check jackets which became popularized by Kaia Gerber and Miley Cyrus.

Shoe and accessory styles also changed as crocs,[28][29] platform sandals, knee high boots, ballet flats, white sneakers such as Vans, Keds, Nike Air Force 1s,[30] or Converse, fringed handbags, multi-colored 80s inspired earrings made from recycled ocean plastic,[31] white bralettes, chunky cable knit scarves, Chelsea boots, and Doc Martens became popular.

Popular colors included gray, silver,[22] pastel pink, violet, pale blue, lavender, mint green,[21] faded yellow, pastel teal, orange, red and brown.[24][32] Workplace dress codes became more casual due to a higher proportion of remote workers among white collar staff, and many professional women paired a formal blouse with casual leg wear like shorts or even pajama bottoms when holding video conferences.[29]

1960s influences and Cottagecore

The middle of 2021 saw a revival of psychedelic mid to late 1960s fashion in the UK, Asia, America, and Africa.Flared trousers,[33] patched jeans,[34] dog's tooth check skirts and mini-dresses, and cropped slim-fitting jeans,[35] were popular pants among younger women. Other favorable articles of clothing included prairie dresses with floral embroidery,[29] backless sundresses,[36] floor-length kaftans with jeans,[37] Pendleton jackets, tiered flamenco dresses that flare out below the knee,[38] satin slip dresses, jumpers with smiley faces and mushroom designs, satin blouses, checkerboard sweater vests,[39] leather 3/4 length coats, Crombie style wool overcoats, leopard print winter coats,[40] zip collar turtleneck sweaters, zip-up polo shirts with white collar trim,[41] clothing with sunflower print, checkerboard motifs, and diamond and hexagonal prints.

Popular colors during this time included brown,[33] sage green, royal blue, hot pink, orange, yellow, and purple.[42]

Cottagecore fashion became popular in Korea, the US, and the UK after social media sites like TikTok, Pinterest, and Tumblr, as well as Western artists such as Taylor Swift, adopted the trend. During the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns in early 2020, cottagecore became popular due to many younger women's desire to escape cities for rural life. Cottagecore fashion is defined by pastel color palettes that evoke a romantic, idealized country aesthetic with Vox characterizing the general cottagecore popularity as an escapist trend where quarantines were romantic instead of terrifying.[43] In terms of fashion, cottagecore centers around pastel-colored and earthly-colors. Popular pieces of clothing include prairie dresses, blue gingham mini-dresses,[44] white gypsy tops with multicolor Mexican-inspired floral embroidery,[45] and hippie-style maxi dresses inspired by those worn during the late 1960s. Gingham and Austerity-era floral patterns also dominate the aesthetic of the look.[43]

Men's clothing

From 2020 to today, fashions of the early to mid 2000s have made a comeback as Generation Z reached adulthood and mixed carefully selected contemporary fashion brands like Ellesse, Kappa, Tommy Hilfiger, or Ralph Lauren[46] with original vintage clothing and recent thrift shop finds.[47][48] Popular trends in the UK, Italy, Sweden,[49] China,[50] the US, and Australia[51] include black or white crew neck shirts designed by Carhartt, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, or Hanes,[52] midnight blue U.S. Woodland camouflage baseball caps,[53] T-shirts with geek chic inspired games console logos,[54] bold multicolor motif shirts popularized by DJ Khaled,[55] tracksuits with business suit styling,[56] "Gorpcore" hiking and fishing clothing like Fjallraven windbreakers or cargo pants,[57]Sandqvist canvas rucksacks,[49] jogger pants as athletic style or more dressed up twill joggers style, black trenchcoats reminiscent of those worn in The Matrix,[58] imitation leather messenger bags featuring throwback logos especially,[59] Fred Perry[60] Oxford shirts with vertical stripes,[61] and club wear — especially brightly patterned camp shirts.[62][63] Other popular items were workwear like fleece jackets, zip-up hoodies or unbranded baseball caps, corduroy pants, trucker caps,[64] and slim-fitting grey or khaki cargo pants worn with matching lightweight M65 Field Jackets with multiple external patch pockets.

Other items of clothing that were reminiscent of the 2000s such as old school hip-hop inspired satin track jackets, athletic tank tops with contrasting black, orange and magenta stripes, bucket hats,[29] sports jerseys, olive cargo pants, brown bomber jackets, preppy Madras plaid shirts, blouson style black leather jackets, long sleeve knitted polo shirts,[65] silk skinny ties with bold prints,[66] tapered high waisted pants known as "dad jeans" in America, brow line sunglasses,[67] pleated khaki chino pants, mid-washed slim-fitting indigo jeans and jean jackets,[68] tie dye socks, oversized sweaters,[67] pale denim bleached almost white,[69] black paisley sweatpants,[70] looser fitting stonewashed jeans, sleeveless undershirts, Nike Shorts, swim shorts, white polo shirts,mid-wash double denim, oversized Bermuda shorts, off-white or navy color block hoodies and sweatpants with a stripe down the leg, parkas, duffle coats,[71] paint-spattered T-shirts, classic blue and white Air Jordans, over shirts made from blanket cloth, retro bowling shirts, striped Rugby shirts, heavily distressed Perfecto motorcycle jackets,[50] and oversized gold chains have also regained popularity.[72]

Common footwear includes loafers with chunky brothel creeper soles[73] favored by Shawn Mendes,[74] suede desert boots, cyan floral print Vans sneakers popularized by Nick of the Jonas Brothers,[75] all-black imitation leather Adidas trainers,[76] suede Timberland boots, Gucci loafers,[77] Lacrosse or Sorel duck boots, suede Beatle boots[78] chunky hiking sandals, white high top Converse All-Stars,[79] Nike Air Max sneakers,[80] worker boots, and combat boots bought as army surplus.

Desirable colors included white, yellow, lime green, brown, charcoal, orange, burgundy, taupe, olive green and pale blue.[81]

As the result of the increase in remote work, workplace dress codes became more casual and employees returning to the office frequently combined 1990s business casual attire with elements of loungewear and athleisure such as black monotone sneakers, navy hoodies, shorts, and even dark grey sweatpants.[82] Due to the closure of many gyms during the pandemic, digital smart watches with timers replaced the traditional analog wristwatches popular in the 2010s as many younger men in Europe and America subscribed to online apps for tracking and planning their exercise routines at home.[83][84] In the UK,[85] Middle East and some parts of Africa,[86] keffiyehs were used in an attempt to block viruses[87] and to show support for Palestinian nationalism.[88][89][90]

1980s revival

Due to many 2000s fashions being throwbacks to the styles of the 1970s and 80s,[91][92] clothing such as pinstripes, textured knits with vertical stripes, leather waistcoats,[72] corduroy, pleated trousers, and Chelsea boots became popular from the fall of 2021 onwards. In Britain and America, clothing with sports logos,[93] color block jackets,[94] aviator sunglasses, striped full-button cardigan sweaters with polo shirt collars,[72] safari suits intended for the modern business casual workplace,[58] double breasted 1940s style sportscoats originally revived in the 80s as part of the power suit,[95] corduroy sportscoats,[96] Ivy League college-style cardigans with trim,[97] jacquard, dog's tooth and cashmere check wool scarves,[98] tricolor socks,[99] Vans,[100] monotone Plimsolls,[61] sheepskin and buffalo plaid trucker jackets,[101] Harrington jackets,[102] baseball jackets with contrasting colored sleeves,[72] toweling polo shirts,[96] turtlenecks, and t-shirts featuring vintage-inspired graphics such as muscle cars comic book characters,[103] advertising brands especially Coca-Cola have gained popularity. Colors such as green, gray, navy blue, red, black, white, and orange were popular and other desired articles of clothing included stylized pale blue and magenta representations of palm trees or cassette players, and 80s movie posters such as the Ghostbusters logo due to the unexpected popularity of the 2021 movie.[104][105]

Gender neutral clothing

Genderless fashion began as a niche Japanese subculture at the end of the 2010s, and had gone mainstream by 2021 with fashion experts speculating that the emerging androgynous style represents a new ideal of male beauty.[106] The style took inspiration from 1980s fashion, anime, trendsetters like Ryuchell, and the often androgynous style of K-pop boy bands.[107] Dyed hair, makeup, short shorts,[108] knee socks, necklaces, tight pants, brothel creepers, Pink Panther and Betty Boop motifs, and feminine blouses in leopard print[109] silver, or bright colors like pink and orange[58] were particularly common.

At the same time, some men in the UK and Korea[110] were also embracing androgynous fashion with accessories like feather boas and [111] drop earrings.[112] Other popular articles of clothing included kimono style shirts, frilly lace blouses, tunics,[58] boots with stacked Cuban heels, crop tops, furry ugg boots,[113] kilts,[114] mint green safari jackets with Nudie Cohn inspired embroidery,[115] shiny jackets with shoulder pads and puffy sleeves, flared trousers,[109] transparent shirts, shawl lapel sportscoats[116] sometimes covered with sequins or rhinestones, thigh boots,[110] oversized silk shirts in purple, green, gold or silver,[58] and suits in eccentric colors like gold lame,[58] shiny green sequins, or fuchsia.[117]

The main trendsetters in androgynous fashion during this time included Sam Smith, Lil Nas X, Italian rock band Måneskin, South Korean pop star Jimin,[114] drag artists Ru Paul and Jodie Harsh,[118] Paul Mescal,[108] African entrepreneur Ezra Olubi,[119] and Harry Styles.

Youth fashion

From 2020 to today, widespread internet and social media access caused a boom in the popularity of 2000s subcultures and fashion styles amongst teenagers. One such subculture was the alternative or pop punk style of the early 2000s. This style is particularly popular among scene kids, punks, emos, skaters and mall goths and was referred to [120] as the "Rawring Twenties" by them on social media.[121][122] Unlike the past, people want to fully recreate the 'peak' of emo culture in every aspect of their lifestyle. This phenomenon also bought a rise in popularity of secondhand shopping, as it allowed people to find genuine or dead stock items from the alternative era of the early 2000s. Reasons for past subculture revivals are nostalgia and the fashion being considered more liberating and eye-catching than modern-day clothing.[123][124][125][126][127][128][129]

E-kid culture of the early 2020s was influenced by 2000s inspired pop punk and emo aesthetics. Celebrities and influencers such as Billie Eilish, Yungblud,[130] Dua Lipa, Lil Peep, and Juice WRLD would base their diverse styles on emo rap, dark trap, ragecore, digicore, and industrial trap music.[131] The pop punk revival of the early 2020s, associated with acts like Machine Gun Kelly, Olivia Rodrigo and Yungblud had a significant E-kid fanbase.

Like the millennial scene kids swapping style tips on MySpace during the mid to late 2000s, Generation Z's use of YouTube and TikTok to showcase their multi-coloured bangs haircuts,[132] customized androgynous all-black outfits, lowrise pants, stripy T-shirts, silver jewellery, mesh tops, plaid or leather miniskirts,[133] platform sneakers, knit caps, band T-shirts, garishly printed shirts, hoodies, fishnets, wallet chains,[134] and pale emo inspired makeup with blush and heavy eyeliner.[135][125][126] The E-kid subculture has been chastised for cultural appropriation and utilizing Asian culture as an aesthetic (anime, k-pop, etc.). Nonetheless, owing to retailers like Hot Topic, the counterculture lives on.[136]

Hip-hop

For Black American and Black British youth, hip-hop fashion became more politicized during the early 2020s due to the influence of social justice activist rappers like Stormzy,[137] No Name,[138] the Black Lives Matter movement, and a resurgence of interest in past civil rights organizations like the Black Panther Party.[139] Slogan T-shirts inspired by punk fashion,[140] black leather jackets or trench coats,[141] hoodies,[142] black sweatpants, face-concealing black bandanas, dark glasses, marijuana motifs, skull masks, morale patches, paramilitary tactical vests,[139] and camouflage patterns were popular. Black American activists in the South sometimes wore blue union army kepis at the demolition of Confederate statues, to taunt lost cause revisionists and white supremacists.

Indie Kids, VSCO girls and Kid-core

Indie fashion of the early 2020s had a major crossover with the Japanese subculture Kid-Core, to the point where the two terms are used interchangeably in the United States when referring to this style. The indie kid look centers around bright colors and nods to the late 90s and 2000s.[143] The popularization of thrifting was felt across the entire internet landscape in 2020 due to Gen Z's distaste for fast fashion and a desire to emulate the past. American and European teens started flooding Thrift Stores like Goodwill in hopes of finding trendy items such as oversized jeans, oversized zip up hoodies, striped cardigans, tie dye orange, pale blue and purple T-shirts, crop tops, collared shirts, shoestring belts, mom jeans and other high waisted pants, joggers, pants, bucket hats, studded belts, Vans skate shoes, platform shoes, floral patterns, flannel shirts, shredded denim, flower crowns, and tennis skirts for girls.[144][145][146] People who influenced this trend include indie rapper Russ and [147] Ausstralian rapper the Kid Laroi.[148]

Though this movement attempted to be anti-conformist and environmentally friendly, this trend has been heavily criticized for young people reselling cheap second hand clothing on websites such as Depop and Etsy for inflated prices.[149][150]

Unlike the hipster subculture of the 2010s, American indie kids of the 2020s took inspiration from the bright fashions of the late 90s and 2000s, bedroom pop, skater fashion, energy drink culture, and hyper pop. In America, similar childlike and retro outfits were worn by many people. The style also included elements of soft grunge style such as pastel pinks and blues,[151] oversized T-shirts, long sweatshirts or sweater dresses, bike shorts, Nike track shorts, Nike Tempo shorts, and high waisted mom shorts, capri and ankle length leggings with socks,[152] T-shirt dresses, denim skirts, jogger pants, overalls, mom jeans, many times with shirts, sweaters, sweatshirts tucked in their jeans and a belt worn, and Nike socks in many different colors.[153][154]

A subsection of the trend is VSCO girls who try to emulate the style of the photo app, VSCO. These girls wear scrunchies on their wrists and in their hair with high and side ponytails and Headbands. Footwear includes white sneakers, ballet flats and sandals. VSCO girls do not wear loud colored or heavy amounts of makeup. Instead they wear little or no makeup, opting for very natural makeup that blends with their skin if any at all.[155]

Dark and light academia

The dark academia aesthetic, which combines elements of preppy and gothic fashion, is heavily influenced by 1930s and 1940s fashion, particularly attire worn by students at Oxbridge, Ivy League colleges, and prep schools during the time.

Cardigans, blazers, dress shirts, plaid skirts, tights, knee socks, Oxford shoes, ballet flats, white sneakers, twill jogger pants, and apparel made of houndstooth and tweed are some of the most identified articles of clothing with the dark academia aesthetic. The typical color palette consisted of primarily of black, white, beige, browns, dark green, and occasionally navy blue.[156][157] The style has been criticized for its having themes of Eurocentrism and unhealthy learning practices.[158][159]

A closely related style, known as "light academia", is characterized by neutral and light colors including light blues, pinks, whites, creamy yellows, beige, light greys, light purple, pastel and dusty colors, plaid, stripes, and argyle patterns. Variants to this style, which originated in America as an internet trend, include "pastel academia," "romantic academia," and "chaotic academia."[160] Unlike dark academia, light academia is about positivity, self-care, and the warm and pleasurable parts of life. Clothing items include pleated skirts, skater dresses, jumper dresses, dresses worn with a belt, sweaters, cardigans, oversized tops, khaki pants, plaid pants, twill jogger pants, high waisted pants, shorts and skirts, argyle and pastel knee socks, argyle and pastel tights, black tights when worn with lighter colored clothes, socks slouched in summer weather, tops tucked into pants and skirts, belts, socks over tights, ankle and capri leggings, bike shorts, mom jeans and others without holes, mom jeans and other high waisted pants worn with shirts, sweatshirts, and sweaters ticked into the pants or jeans and a belt, dress shirts under sweaters and sweatshirts, turtlenecks, polo style shirts, dressy shorts, ballet flats, boat shoes, Mary Jane flats, white sneakers such as Keds or Sperry Top-Siders, flat ankle boots, loafers, headbands, scrunchies, watches, and thin bangles.[161][162][163]

Goblincore and fairy grunge

Goblincore, also known as gremlincore, is an American subculture and style of art based on the enjoyment of features of nature that aren't usually considered conventionally beautiful. Animals like frogs and snails, as well as materials like moss, dirt, plants, and fungi like mushrooms, can all be considered as goblincore. The Goblin is an evil thieving creature in European mythology but also serves as a carefree expression of one's infatuation with nature's ugliness and goblincore is part of that ugliness.

Goblincore is popular in the LGBTQ+ community and attire can include,[164] any adventure-ready gear — however most goblin core fans appear to prefer ensembles with multiple clashing patterns/colors especially oversized sweaters — or worn-out or customized pants and overalls. For a more relaxed vibe, much of the apparel is worn-out, thrifted, or second-hand which is similar to the crust punk fashion of the late 1990s. Most goblincore enthusiasts prefer getting dirty, therefore keeping their clothes clean isn't a priority for them.[165]

Fairy grunge combines the aesthetics of fairy-core and grunge. Creators on TikTok and other social media platforms were mostly responsible for popularizing this aesthetic. Fairy grunge might be seen as a natural extension of the kinderwhore style — which also has deep roots to grunge — but with a more ethereal touch, given its intentions. The fairy grunge fashion often includes oversized t-shirts or hoodies, long or mini skirts, nightgowns, corsets, mittens gloves, skull patterns mesh tights or fishnets, high knee socks, leg warmers, platform Demonia shoes, fairy wings, and sometimes elf ears.[166][167]

Hairstyles

Women

Due to the restrictions on hair salons during the COVID-19 lockdowns,[168] many women grew out their hair.[169] Popular hairstyles include curtain bangs,[170] 1980s and 1990's inspired bangs, ponytails, shaggy hair commonly commonly known as the "wolf cut",[171] and natural hair for Black American women.[172] Along with these hairstyles, early 2000s fashion inspired straightened and brightly dyed hair was made popular by Doja Cat and Billie Eilish.[135]

Common hair accessories included pearl and sequin hair clips, headbands, and scrunchies. Some women in the UK, US, and Asia attempted DIY haircuts while self-isolating, including styles such as the bob cut, the crop,[173] the partially shaved head, bangs, and the pixie cut.[174] w

Beginning in 2020, the wearing of a full beard associated with the hipster subculture underwent a decline,[175] except in parts of the Middle East, Africa, Eastern Europe and Latin America. When worn, beards in the West were generally trimmed short[176] to accentuate the wearer's features and facilitate the wearing of a face mask.[177]

1990s and early 2000s inspired hairstyles such as side parted or centrally parted curtained hair,[178] permed hair, bleached hair, Mullets, and shaggy hair[179] saw a comeback among teenagers and young adult men due to barbershops being forced to close during the lockdowns in the UK and US.[180] Many younger Black men opted for natural hair from 2021 onwards, especially the skin fade,[181] textured Caesar cut[175] and short versions of the afro or dreadlocks combined with an undercut. Meanwhile, many balding men in America and Ireland continued to get buzz cuts at home during the lockdown.[182]

Body modifications

From 2021 to today, new tattoo styles have emerged among young people. Popular trends for women include colorful modern reinterpretations of traditional Japanese tattoos, psychedelic art, tramp stamps, minimalist black and white portraits, lightning bolts, fine art, pop culture mashups, holograms, and dot work. Other popular tattoo designs include spiritual meanings such as representations of the Buddha, Hindu mandalas, and the Tree of Life.[183] Tribal tattoos and hyper realistic portraits of loved ones that had been popular during the 2010s have declined in popularity.[184]
